Hand Coloured Engravings

Engraving is a technique used for either making prints, or to create an artwork in itself such as glass or metal engravings. Initially used to reproduce illustrations onto newspapers and books, the technique was soon overtaken by etching and photography. Engraving has since remained a very popular and highly sought after craft.

Usually, a hard surface such as copper is used, and with a tool (a graver), grooves are made by cutting into the surface, creating an impression of an image. Depending on the print technique, relief, planographic or Intaglio, the image can be transferred to a medium such as paper or plastic, or made into an art piece on its own.

It is important to remember that when it comes to hand coloured engravings, there will always be two artists’ names noted at the bottom of the artwork – one the engraver and the other the painter.
