South African seascape paintings often depict ships at sea, harbours, fishing villages and broad stretches of coastlines. Seascape painting was a genre particularly strong from the 17th to 19th centuries, during the height of sea exploration and travel. Nowadays seascapes attract the appeal and interest of many admirers. Seascapes are perfect for people that once built ships, worked on ships, travelled using ships, even those that today aspire to one day owning their own boat or yacht – or already do!
