ANDRE STEAD
Born 1975

Born in 1975, André studied in several artistic disciplines including painting, sculpture, jewellery, graphics and packaging design. In 1994 he moved to Cape Town where he trained in metal work (welding and forging).

He worked at the Doyle Art Foundry for a year and became familiar with the bronze casting process. During this period, in addition to sculpting in metal, he produced figurative wood-carvings, created functional art pieces and produced a series of Bronze sculptural awards for Sanlam and the Standard Bank Arts Festival in Grahamstown.

In 1999 André began working at the Bronze Age Art Foundry. He became efficient in all the various stages of the lost-wax process of bronze casting. In 2001 he collaborated with two other artists to create the Board of Executors (B.O.E.) large sculpture at the entrance to their headquarters at the Clock Tower precinct at the V & A Waterfront in Cape Town.

André subsequently developed and manages the Foundry Sculpture Course which teaches all aspects of bronze sculpture production.

He has exhibited at various top galleries in South Africa and has work in London, Germany, France and Switzerland.
