Born and raised in the heart of the Free State, Benjamin Mitchley went on to Matriculate from Welkom High School in 1984. Thereafter, expanded his keen interest in the art world by studying Fine Arts at the Vaal Technikon (1985-1986) and then later at Pretoria Technikon (1987). This South African artist is well known for his seascapes and township art.
Benjamin describes his work:
“The human Spirit is important in my work because it is part of me.
In my latest works I depict scenes of everyday life as in the paintings of the Impressionists. My aim is to capture the moment, as well as to depict the atmosphere or energy around the subject. The contours that form the shapes on my canvas, in these works, comes together when viewed from a distance, to create a more realistic view of the subject painted.”
“My earlier works vary in style and technique. I am a versatile artist when it concerns commissioned work, in respect of painting on canvas, mural work, as well as sculpture and scenic painting and faux techniques.”
“In October 2004, I worked on the IBN Battuta Shopping Mall in Dubai - the biggest themed shopping mall in the world. I will always cherish the friendly, kind and hospitable nature of the people I met during my stay in Dubai.”
“I travelled to Zurich, Switzerland, in April 2005. People going to, and coming from work in Zurich’s main station, as well as people coming out to celebrate the sunlight after a cold and cloudy day, had a major impact on me. I started looking at my fellow humans more closely, and in turn at myself, recognising more good than bad. This brought about the change in the style of my work.”
“In December 2005, I traveled to Munich Germany. Ancient and classic artworks have influenced me from a young age and seeing them up close gave me a deeper sense of appreciation.”
In 2006 this South African artist returned to Dubai to produce further exhibits for the IBN Battuta Shopping Mall. Towards the end of the year Benjamin Mitchley returned to South Africa to work with scenery company, ITS, on Monte Casino’s East End Teatro project in Johannesburg. 2007 saw Mitchley return to Dubai to work on a sculpture project for the Dubai Municipality with Gulf Creative.
