DENNIS KALIL
Born 1943 – Bloemfontein, South Africa
Denis was educated at Christian Brothers College and then at Rhodes University where he did a B.Sc. in geology and chemistry. His early work life was spent prospecting for large companies in the mineral extraction business but at the same time, unwittingly observing landscape studies that he would paint and draw later on in his life.
Dennis found himself associated with many artists as he enjoyed their unrestricted views and that they always seemed to enjoy thinking about things and issues. (Quite a contrast to the business world where reports were always written under pressure and to deadlines)
His art tuition was mainly through association, trial and error and then always evaluated and criticized by his peers in an effort to do better. His natural choice of subject matter was of course expansive landscapes with mountains and often streams with blankets of wild flowers in the veld. The Karoo has provided much inspiration with its timeless forms, rich colours and distant horizons.
Dennis works equally well in watercolour, acrylic, tempera and oils.
Much of Dennis’ work is collected by overseas visitors whether tourists or on business. Many works have pride of place in homes and business in the U.K., U.S.A., Canada and Germany.
