About the Artist

Gary Benfield set up his own studio near London after leaving behind the world of academia, wishing to continue pursuing illustration and painting. His figurative artwork has been collected throughout Europe and the US and his reputation as a consummate artist is firmly established.
 

Style and format

Drawing plays an integral role in Benfield's images and his background, as an illustrator is clearly evident in much of his work. Fine, sweeping lines combine with washes of colour, suggesting movement and form. He paints with spontaneity and passion, and keeps only the images that he feels are perfected in their conception, rather than overwork those that he feels are not.

The images in Benfield’s figurative art represent a discrete world of objects which combine figures, mythology, nature and still life. Despite the casual appearance of his compositions, all this imagery is highly organized, and after long observation one finds the hidden symmetry of the graphic design.

For Gary Benfield, the world around him is a continuous sequence of contained causality. Objects and figures intertwine in his mind, they dance and they fuse – one adopting the colour and life of the other.
