GAVIN WRIGHT
Born 1963 Harare, Zimbabwe - Died 2003 Johannesburg, South Africa
Gavin's main interest was as a dedicated conservationist - a belief he had nurtured since his early school days and trips into the bush. To aid his understanding he began to sketch while observing wildlife within natural surroundings. Later in library or from reference books, he began to annotate his sketches and pen and ink works.
Friends and acquaintances began to sweep up his work and soon, by word of mouth, a strong market developed. This enabled Gavin to spend more time in his favourite bush camps - particularly in Botswana.
Although largely self taught, Gavin paid heed to his respected peers whilst maintaining a 'look' which suggested each painting was from his own 'biography of the bush'.
Many a commission include, The Kruger Park Centenary where one of his paintings was auctioned for R22 000, and The Endangered Wildlife Trust in 1999.
Many of Gavin’s paintings are in the private and corporate collections worldwide, namely Germany, France, the U.S.A, Canada and Australia.
Gavin passed away suddenly after undergoing surgery for a back ailment. This was at the height of his popularity due to his improving quality of work and unique style. Regrettably very few originals remain, although a vibrant set of reproductions are still available.
