About the Artist

Gerrit Roon was a young man when he emigrated from Holland to South Africa in 1958. He was instantly impressed by South Africa’s scenery and quality of light, and soon began experimenting in oils, watercolours and pastels before settling on oils as his chosen medium of expression.

Although interested in drawing and sketching from an early age, Gerrit Roon never pursued formal art training and remains largely self-taught. His diligence and devotion to his craft has nevertheless enabled him to produce landscape art that is imbued with uniqueness of both interpretation and style.

Style and Format

The subject matter for Gerrit Roon’s landscape art ranges from wildlife, to villages and hills to his famous coastal scenes.  His treatment of light, balance of colour and composition put him at the forefront of contemporary South African landscape artists.

Many visitors to South Africa are particularly drawn to this South African artist’s work, as it combines lush treatment of South African scenery with expert technique. Gerrit uses much paint and many colours in his post-Impressionist style, creating realistic images.

When viewed up close, Gerrit’s technique of combining many colours in impasto form appears not to form a recognizable subject. His work is slow and deliberate, building layer upon layer until the desired effect is created. This is particularly true of his depictions of boats in West Coast harbours.

Gerrit is most famous for his Table Mountain scenes, blue gums in the highveld and his beloved fishing boats and harbour scenes. Collectors of Gerrit’s work have witnessed their acquisitions steadily increase in value – a true measure of quality of work and uniqueness of talent.
