MARCELLE LYONS
Born 1945 – Johannesburg, South Africa
Though showing considerable artistic merit at school, it was after her matriculation that Marcelle followed the route of artistic expression in ceramics.
Always a selfless sharer of talent and techniques, Marcelle taught ceramics from 1968 onwards. From the early 80’s she exhibited nationally and internationally – London and various venues in Spain where she lived for a period of overseas study.
A meeting with acclaimed portrait artist Ryno Swart convinced her to return to painting under his tutelage. From this her confidence and expertise grew along with a greater market acceptance of her works for sale. She started with mainly figurative and floral studies and has lately moved towards painting landscapes, still life and interiors.
Marcelle always kept her touch with students – many of whom she taught at artists co-operatives and self help groups. She is at pains to point out that she the teacher is often taught by her pupils (she has the generosity and spirit of a true egalitarian!)
One of her guiding philosophies is that one should be happy and enjoy painting the chosen subjects – if not it will become apparent in the finished work and demonstrate to the world that the finished painting is forced and somewhat unnatural.
In 2001 Marcelle joined others in traveling and painting their way through Europe for the experience and the discipline – it was great fun broadening mind and market alike.
Nowadays Marcelle contents herself with teaching and painting for exhibitions she chooses together with chosen galleries who regularly stock her work. Marcelle’s work displays strength through technique, vision and subtlety and will always be collected for its great future value.
