About the Artist

The first evidence of any artistic inclination surfaced in Willie Strydom’s primary school days, when he would draw anything that tickled his fancy. Art was inevitably one of Willie’s subjects when he went to High School, and his first oil painting – a dog resting on a sofa - still proudly hangs in his mother’s room.

After matriculating, this South African artist attended art school at the Pretoria Technikon, where he studied graphic design and Fine Arts. He was then called up to do his national service before beginning a career as a drawing officer at an engineering firm, where he remained for the next twelve years. During this period, Willie was still painting the odd landscape in his spare time, most of which were purchased by family and friends.

Willie later moved the South Coast in Natal where he started a kitchen and built-in cupboard factory with his brother, Dawie. Fifteen years later, Willie finally decided to concentrate on his God given talent and started painting full time. It is no surprise that after this decision, he has become more at peace within himself and has surprised family and friends at the amount and quality of work he has been able to produce in a short period of time.

Style & Format

Willie has displayed the determination of a man that knows his goal in life, and how he will get there. This South African artist’s most recent works have been acrylic on canvas, and Willie loves the vibrant colour this versatile medium gives him. His colourful interpretations of life have found their way into galleries and in private collections across South Africa and abroad.

Although mainly known for his colourful expressive landscape art portraying of the Highveld and Boland regions, Willie also loves to portray the haphazard architecture of the Cape Malay quarters and older suburbs.
